DESIGNING MEANINGFUL CLASSES
a workshop for teachers

Body & Mind trilogies

Body & mind trilogies

In these masterclasses we will focus on the body as an entry point for deeper awareness of ourselves and the world around us, and thus an understanding that we we are part of this intricate matrix of life, this planet and the universe.

1. SPINE – a story of evolution

2. SKIN – the boundary of you (or not)

3. CELLS – the microcosm is the macrocosm

With our mind we can study the various parts of our body, like a map. But just looking at that map won’t tell us a whole lot about the experience of really being in those places. Something similar happens when we soften our ever-grasping minds and let ourselves travel into the felt sense of different, maybe unfamiliar parts of our body. And remarkably as we become more attuned to whole territory of our body, it offers us a lot of insight about our relationship to the bigger whole.

What can the origin of our spine tell us about our relation to other life forms and how can it offer us more freedom in our body-mind? What does the permeable boundary of our skin tells us about our perception of separateness? And how can awareness of the smallest building blocks of our organism, our cells, actually make us feel more connected to the bigger whole that we are part of?

In these masterclasses we will dive deeper into the non-dual philosophy of tantra to understand better how to live to our full potential. Despite the sound of it and the misconceptions that exist, tantra is a very accessible philosophy. The tantrikas wished to strive for enlightenment within daily life! Tantra actually recognizes we are human beings living this human life and we can still strive for something more without having to be ascetic and renounce the life that we know.

1. ORIGIN – from formlessness to form

2. EMBODIMENT – about Shiva and our humanness

3. UNBOUND – your infinite potential

The non-dual philosophy of tantra invites us to look at ourselves and everything around us as one. The origin of this universe is an endless formless field which chose to express itself as a myriad different forms. As humans we are just a contracted form of that field endowed with self-consciousness, the capacity to reflect on ourselves and the world around us. Through our embodiment we can experience the wonder of this unique opportunity we happen to be given! But being human also means we are bound to forget that we are not separate. This is the constand dance of contraction and expansion, the is the innate rhythm of life that Shiva represents. In the contracted state we tend to think we are not enough, in the expanded state we get glimpses of the infinite potential we all innately are given. Yoga ultimately invites us to break through the constructs and concepts that keep us boxed up and small and to yoke to that unbound ground we originated from.

Designing meaningful classes

Designing meaningful classes

Over the almost seven of facilitating yoga classes – and another 10 years before that as a movement teacher – Lies has developed a unique teaching style in which she weaves her poetic language with various elements depending on the context of the class. More than once teachers came to her after class to ask where she trained or how she comes up with her classes. Mainly her students describe her classes as a journey that takes them deeply inward and into an experience.

“Bliss. Coming home. Surrender.

On the one hand there's always that blissful flow

that takes you on a journey full of discoveries about your body and mind.
On the other hand Lies offers much more than only movement:

the principles she offers in class help both on a physical level - a satisfying yoga practice -

as on a mental level, they encourage to reflect.

I appreciate this enormously.
It really sets things in motion and positively influences my process of life.”

In this workshop Lies shares some methodologies that help in designing classes even more skillfully and thoroughly and will help refine teaching skills. She is really excited about working into the depth of things, offering both challenge and added value. We’ll get practical and design a sample class together so you immediately get to apply what you learned.

"Thanks for this enriching and inspiring afternoon Lies!

Not only I enjoyed it at the moment itself,

I developed and integrated the exercises we did and what an instant effect!

After class several students came to thank me for the great session.

Since then I have built each class from your vision."

About Lies

For Lies, yoga is about embodying certain ideas and aspects of life and about untangling the threads of you, the world and life itself. Therefore she uses yoga to, through movement and philosophy, explore and discover, learn more about ourselves and the world, hopefully find meaning in life itself - even though we might never fully understand - and so become more understanding and compassionate. For her yoga unites the very defined matter of our bodies themselves with the seeking for answers for the fundamental questions of life that we all share. Who are we? Where do we come from? Why are we here? And how can we live best to our full potential?

Lies will offer you a safe space with lots of freedom and the permission to work within the ranges of your possibilities. She loves to work both within the structured frame of familiar asanas and at the same time encourage you to venture outside of the safe space of the known, even off your mat. Because it is when you truly learn to take ownership and not only be guided by what you are told to do.

Lies graduated as a ‘Bachelor of Dance‘ form the renowned Codarts Academy in Rotterdam in 2004, After 10 years of a professional dance career, she felt drawn to know more about yoga and completed her first teacher training in 2014. Currently she finds great inspiration in the unique style of the school of Tara Judelle and Scott Lyons, Embodied Flow™, with whom she studied in Bali.

Lies is a certified yoga teacher (E-RYT500 & YACEP) and has been teaching full time since 2015 in studios like AntwerpYoga – where she is still part of the teacher training team - and Studio Pili. In her search to align closer to what feels true she recently moved closer to nature which meant having to let go of her weekly classes but created an opportunity to develop deeper programs.
